HOME TOUR // Summer Styling

| | | | | |

Welcome to my first ever Summer Styling Blog Tour from July of 2017. I remember this tour very well as I was very nervous! I hope you enjoy looking back into the past with me.

Summer Styling

Three years ago, I was thrilled to be invited to join six other bloggers (who I love) on a blog tour. I immediately accepted (duh.). Of course, I had never participated in a blog tour of my home. So my first thought was pure panic.

Back then, our home was still a work in progress. I started redecorating our home into a farmhouse style décor in February of 2017. Not all of the rooms were done (in fact more than half of them aren’t even close). But the thought of creating a cohesive theme in our home for summer was too exciting to pass up.

I chose a theme around one of my favorite fruits, peaches. To me, peaches represent pure summer. When I think of summer I think of peach cobbler, whole fresh peaches, and grilled peaches in just about any recipe. It’s interesting that I chose to use peaches again this year as the inspiration for my summer decor.

Our house has a neutral palette so I was really excited to bring in some “peach” summer color from outside.

Before we start the tour, I thought I would share a little bit about my me and blog. Our 100-year-old home is located in South Pasadena, California. My husband and I have three sons and although they are out of the house, they visit quite often! Our house looks its best in the summer because we love to open all of the doors and spend all of our time on the back porch. Outdoor living is wonderful all summer in Southern California.

My 100 Year Old Home

My husband and I bought the home from his parents in 1998 and we survived three major remodels in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Today I’m sharing four rooms and soon I will be sharing a few more! If you’re not already, make sure to subscribe to the blog by clicking here so you don’t miss out on new posts!

Now onto the tour!

As a side note, if you’re curious about any item, it’s listed by room at the end. Included in this post are some affiliate links so thank you for supporting the practices that keep me going!

The Dining Room

Our dining room used to be a room that we used only on holidays. Now that it’s been redone and it’s lighter, brighter, and more comfortable, we use it all of the time!

Of course, I took down all of the drapes a year later. They had shredded on the backside from the sun and I love how our dining room looks without them.

Easy Summer Styling

I love my Pottery Barn table and chairs because it seats ten! I always keep it set for eight and store the other two chairs under the side windows. The light wood on our table really lends to a more casual and relaxed feel in our dining room.

Dining Room

The sideboard (similar here) is was bought that spring and I can’t tell you how much I love the additional storage. I keep all of the items that I use to set the table here. It’s so convenient to have everything so close and makes setting the table so much easier.

Dining Room

The china is Johnson Bros Rose Chintz. If you read one of my previous posts, you might remember I have a slight problem collecting china. I have collected a lot of china over the years. And I mean a lot! I also have a small collection of depression glass. I bought these peach glasses at Brimfield many, many years ago! The polka dot water glasses were purchased at K-Mart back when they sold exclusively the Martha Stewart homewares products.

China Patterns

These small black and white appetizer plates are made by Rae Dunn. The placemats are from Ikea! Aren’t these great for summer styling?

The Butler’s Pantry

Coffee Station

We have a wonderful Butler’s Pantry which is situated between our dining room and kitchen. It has an old copper sink and faux copper ceiling that I installed shortly after we moved in.

Coffee Station

The sink, wood countertops, and cabinets are original to the house. I use our butler’s pantry for storage and it hosts our coffee station. This copper latte machine was a gift from my husband. I have had it for fifteen years!

The Kitchen

Now let’s move to one of my favorite parts of our home… our kitchen! Our kitchen was remodeled in 2000 and has remained timeless. That is what I love most about it!

Easy Summer Styling

To bring some color into the kitchen we added a copper tray to the island. I can’t believe the pop of color that was created just by adding fresh fruit to the island. I love the cutting boards, their shape, and that you can hang them when not in use.

We did a major remodel in 2000 that included a new kitchen, enlarging the family room, remodeling and adding an additional bathroom, and adding an entirely new back porch. The cabinets, island, and hood are all custom. Our island is butcher block and our countertops are honed marble. I should probably mention that all of the countertops are 2” taller than standard. I am 5’11” tall, my husband is 6’2” and our sons are 6’7”, 6’6” and 6’4”. So the extra two inches seemed to be a necessity.

My favorite part of our kitchen is the island. We put electrical strips on both sides and I cook every meal right here.

Summer Styling

I replaced the white hydrangeas next to the stove with some faux flowers. I absolutely love the new pop of color!

Summer Styling

Don’t these fruits and cheese platters look yummy? I promise they were. They were a fabulous lunch on our summer styling day!

I bought new kitchen towels at TJ Maxx and I can’t believe how much color they add to my white kitchen! (Side note- I laughed so hard when I saw the photos only to realize the kitchen towels were completely cattywampus! Just keeping it real!!)

My letter board from Walmart looks great with the gray lettering. I have always believed that summer is a state of mind! And the final touch was a homemade peach drink to quench the thirst on a warm southern California day.

The Family Room

Summer Styling

Just through the large opening in the kitchen are our family room and dining area. I love that this room opens up to our kitchen, my craft room, the backyard, and our back porch. This is the room we spend the most time in and I love that it’s so central to our home.

Summer Styling

One of my favorite things I did for the home tour was to make stencils for all of my chalkboards. I came up with some fun summer sayings and cut them out on my Cricut machine. Then I just filled in the stencils with white chalk.

Summer Styling

We have a long table in the room that was made by a carpenter. He used old reclaimed boards so I consider it an antique table. The chairs are the Village chairs from Crate and Barrel. Although they no longer are available in green, they do come in lots of colors including white and off white. They are the sturdiest chairs! The table is set for an afternoon lunch. I used a ruffled linen table cloth from Home Goods which I love. The plates are Portmeirion and I love how well they work with all of the fresh fruits.

Check back here tomorrow as the Summer Styling Blog Tour continues. I will be sharing lots of photos from our back porch and my Project room.

    1. Ha! I love this! If I have one piece of advice, it’s to go classic! We redid our kitchen 17 years ago and obviously back then I had no idea that I would get into farmhouse style but because it’s basic enough with some fun details, it kind of works with any style. Best of luck in saving up and know how worth it it will be!

  4. What a gorgeous home! Your kitchen is so bright and airy, and I love how you styled all the peach accents throughout! Can’t wait to see your spaces tomorrow!
