AROUND THE HOUSE // Collecting Quilts

|

Just when I thought I had shared all of my so-called “collections”, I happened to look up to the top shelf of our linen press. Oops. I forgot. I also collect vintage quilts. And I have a lot of them.

I bought my first antique quilt 25 years ago. I was at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and found a hand stitched quilt for $20. I couldn’t believe it. It was in perfect condition so of course, I bought it. Over the years I have found more quilts at the Rose Bowl, and the Ventura Flea Market, tag sales, and even Brimfield. I don’t think I have ever paid over $40 for any of my quilts.

I only buy quilts that are hand stitched. The machine stitched ones are too new. I don’t mind if they have a few worn spots because the older they are, the softer they feel. I also have bought quilts in lots of different colors. The ones at our beach house are all blue and aqua and the ones at home are just about every color imaginable. I am currently hunting for white vintage quilts but they are hard to find. I have my fingers crossed.

And just so you know, Sport has his own quilt. He knows if he is going to jump up and sleep on the couch, he has to sleep on the quilt. I think he loves vintage quilts just as much as I do.
